Planting Brussels Sprouts

Brussells sprouts can be direct sown in the garden, but starting them undercover to protect them from the heat can give them a head start. Plant seeds 1cm (1/2") deep, 8cm (3") apart if direct sowing seeds or 60cm (24") apart if transplanting seedlings, and 60cm (24") between rows. Brussels sprouts prefer a firm soil rich in organic matter, and need full sun. The plants may require staking as they mature, so ensure you have enough space if it becomes necessary.

Growing Brussels Sprouts

If you started seeds undercover, plant out the seedlings when they have at least 5 leaves. If the seeds were direct sown, thin the seedlings out once they reach 15cm (6") tall. Brussels sprouts need consistent watering to maintain proper sprout development, and will benefit from mulch around the base of the plant to keep the soil moist and out of the sun. After thinning, use a nitrogen-rich fertiliser every 3-4 weeks to encourage healthy sprout growth. Row covers can help to protect from problems such as pests (aphids, cabbage worms), mildew, and mould. Remove any yellowing leaves from the bottom of the plant to allow more sunlight in and encourage the plant to focus on the healthy growth.

Harvesting Brussels Sprouts

Brussels sprouts are mature when the sprout is roughly 2.5cm (1") in diameter, but can be harvested earlier for a sweeter flavour. Sprouts on the bottom of the stalk will mature first and be cut off as they reach the desired size, or the entire stalk can be removed when all sprouts are of a suitable maturity. Brussels sprouts will store better if they are washed before use, rather than when harvested.
