Planting Turnips
Turnips don't transplant well, so direct sow seeds if possible. Plant seeds 1cm (1/2") deep, in rows 30cm (12") apart. Turnips prefer loose well-draining soil rich in organic matter, and need full sun but will tolerate partial shade.
Growing Turnips
Once the turnips are 5cm (2") tall, thin them out to be 10cm (4") apart. Turnips are a low-maintenance crop, but will benefit from a balanced fertiliser every few weeks. Water regularly, and mulch around the plants to help with moisture retention. Be careful when weeding the bed to not disturb the turnip roots, as not to stunt growth.
Harvesting Turnips
Turnip greens can be harvested from a young age by cutting 5cm (2") above the root of the plant. If you're also growing for the root, harvest sparingly as it may impact the turnip's development.
The desired size of the root depends on the variety, but 5cm (2") in width is a good baseline. Loosen the soil around the turnip and gently pull it from the bed.
