Planting Basil
Basil can be planted once the risk of frost has passed. Plant seeds 0.5cm (1/4") deep, 25cm (10") apart with 40cm (16") between rows. Basil prefers well-draining soil, and while it will thrive in full sun, it can also tolerate some shade.
Growing Basil
Once the plant has 6 leaves, prune off any growth above the second set. This will encourage the plant to branch out, and should be repeated on each branch once it also reaches 6 leaves, which will ensure plenty of leaf production for harvest. Basil plants like moisture, and will benefit from mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture if conditions become too hot.
Remove any flowering shoots as they grow, as leaving them to bloom and form seed will worsen the flavour of the leaves and lessen production.
Harvesting Basil
Basil leaves can be harvested once the plant is around 20cm (8") tall. Regularly picking the leaves will encourage new growth, and the leaves are freshest when picked in the morning. If the weather is about to become cold, harvest the leaves, as cold temperatures can destroy the plant.
