Planting Lettuce

Lettuce seeds need light to germinate, so avoid planting them too deep. Scatter the seeds over the bed or tray, and lightly cover with soil. Lettuce will grow in most soil types, but prefers moisture-retaining soil rich in organic matter.

Growing Lettuce

Once the seedlings have at least 3 true leaves, thin them out to be 15cm (6") apart in the bed, with the same distance between rows. Heading and crisphead lettuce varieties will need more space, 20cm (8") between plants and 30cm (12") between rows. Lettuce requires frequent watering, and mulch will help retain moisture in the soil and prevent the roots from heat damage. Beginning several weeks after transplanting, a monthly feeding with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser will assist in leaf development. A light row cover can help deter pests, as well as providing protection from the heat of the day.

Harvesting Lettuce

For leaf lettuce, harvest the outer leaves as they reach the desired size using scissors or a knife. This will keep them from becoming bitter, and allow the plant to focus on new leaf production. For crisphead lettuce, once the centre of the head feels firm it can be harvested by cutting just above the roots of the plant. Lettuce should be harvested in the morning, when the leaves are cool and full of moisture.
