Planting Chives

If starting outdoors, wait until after your last frost date to sow seeds. Plant seeds 0.5cm (1/4") deep, 5cm (2") apart with 25cm (10") between rows. Chives prefer a rich, well-draining soil, and thrives in full sun, but can also tolerate some shade. Chives can also be grown by gently digging up an established plant and separating into divisions, then planting the divisions separately.

Growing Chives

Once seedlings are 3cm (1") tall, thin to allow approximately 15cm (6") between them. Water frequently to keep the soil moist and prevent the tips of the plant from browning. Chive bulbs grow close to the soil surface, and will benefit from mulch around the plant to retain moisture and deter weeds. Established plants should be divided every few years to encourage leaf production, and they can be gently dug up and repotted indoors in areas with frosty winters to allow them to survive.

Harvesting Chives

Harvest by cutting the leaves near the base of the plant to encourage new growth. The leaves are best used fresh, but can also be dried for storage. Chive flowers are also edible, and taste best just after opening.
