Planting Sage
Sage is slow to germinate and mature, and is recommended to grow from cuttings or seedlings when possible.
If starting seeds outdoors, they can be planted 1-2 weeks before your final frost. Plant seeds 0.5cm (1/4") deep, 30cm (12") apart, with the same distance between rows. Sage prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter, and thrives in full sun.
Growing Sage
While the plant is still developing, sage requires frequent watering to maintain growth. Keep the soil damp but not soaked, and fertilise with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser monthly after the plant is established.
Harvesting Sage
It is recommended not to harvest from a sage plant during its first year, to give it time to fully mature. Leaves can be harvested after about 10 weeks, but should be done so sparingly as not to negatively affect plant development.
