Planting Cucumbers
Cucumbers are vulnerable to frost, and should be direct down after your last frost date or grown undercover up to 3 weeks before your last frost date to get a head start. Plant seeds 1cm (1/2") deep, with 60cm (24") between plants and the same distance between rows. Cucumbers prefer well-draining soil rich in organic matter, and thrive in full sun.
Growing Cucumbers
As they grow, cucumbers will vine out and spread. For smaller gardens, training the vines up a fence or trellis will help to save space, which has the added benefit of protecting fruit from damage on the ground. Cucumbers require consistent watering, and will greatly benefit from mulch to discourage evaporation. When watering, avoid getting the leaves wet, as this can encourage diseases which would damage the plant.
If your bed was not treated with compost before planting, fertilise the cucumber plants with a liquid fertiliser high in phosphorous and potassium once flowering begins, and repeat every 3 weeks after to promote healthy flower and fruit development. Optionally, spray vines with a sugar water mixture to attract bees to aid in pollination.
Harvesting Cucumbers
Pick cucumbers as soon as they reach the expected size, as oversized cucumbers will become bitter. Most slicing cucumbers are ready at 15-20cm (6-8"), dill cucumbers at 10-15cm (4-6"), and pickling cucumbers at 2cm (1"). Cut the cucumber at the stem, avoiding any pulling which may damage the vine. Store wrapped tightly in plastic to retain moisture, and use within 7-10 days for optimal flavour.
